CHAPTER 13

“You should have called me, I could have helped you with those darn sirens, everyone around here respects ol’ Hermes!”

“Is that so?” I said and took a bite of my breakfast pastry. “Something tells me you would have taken one look at them and ran in the opposite direction—they weren’t exactly friendly.”

“Bah, like I’m afraid of a few fish folk. You know people used to call me The Amazing Hermes? I was the wizard of a generation!”

“And now you’re in a cat’s body, sitting on an avocado pillow next to a radiator. Time’s change.”

“I’m still fierce!” Hermes protested. “I’d do a lot more around here if I just got a little respect!”

I smirked again. “I believe you Hermes. A lot of people take you for granted around here.” Sometimes the easiest way to get him to stop talking was to tell him what he wanted to hear.

“Finally! A little bit of recognition!”

“Any idea how I can track down these missing sirens then?” I asked him.

“Huh?” Hermes looked at me with one of his legs stuck in the air, he had just started cleaning himself.

“The sirens, how would you deal with the problem?”

Hermes thought about the question for a long moment. “I mean, I don’t have ideas right at this moment, you kind of caught me on the back foot here!”

I laughed. “Of course, of course. Well you come to me when something comes to mind.”

Not long after that Daphne arrived for the morning preparation, and we started getting the bakery ready for the day. A few hours later we flipped the door sign to ‘open’ and the busy morning began. Bringing Daphne on and introducing her new bakes had really been a breath of fresh air to the shop, our customer numbers had jumped significantly since she’d come on board.

Halfway to noon I went upstairs for a quick tea break in the apartment. I’d just sat down with my cup of tea when Daphne shouted up to me from downstairs.

“Hey, there’s a cop here to see you. Says it’s about work?”

I put my cup down on the table and sighed. Blake. “Send him up!” I shouted to her.

Blake came up the stairs and stepped into the apartment. “Morning.”

“Morning. Not wearing any shades today?”

“The eyes finally healed over,” he said.

“I half expected some new injuries from your little winged-hedgehog problem.”

“Uh yeah, I’m not going near that thing again.” Blake chuckled nervously and took a seat at the table with me. “I’ll leave it to your little magical friend.”

“Want a drink?” I asked him.

“Coffee would be great, thanks.”

I got up and poured him a cup from the pot and then sat at the table again. “Go on then, spit it out, I know this isn’t a social call.”

Blake sipped his drink and put it down. “I’ve made a little headway with the case; I’ve even got a few suspects. I was hoping you might come out with me today and help me speak to them.”

“Why me?” I asked.

“Because you’re good at that type of thing, and I struggle to keep a lid on my emotions sometimes.
